The lyrics for The Banks of the Dee were written by John Tait in 1775, when
a friend left Scotland to join the British forces in America. The second stanza
hints at the conflict with the second stanza and its reference to iproud
rebelsi:
But now heis gone from and left me thus mourning,
To quell the proud rebelsifor valiant is he;
And ah! thereis no hope of his speedy returning,
To wander again on the banks of the Dee
Set to the tune Langolee (a common Irish aire) and sung by soldiers on both
sides, this song soon became one of the most popular tunes sung by the
British during the Revolutionary War.
