"Latin Destination" is a beginning Latin jazz piece designed for band programs with limited instrumentation, yet it includes parts for all the instruments found in a young and eager beginning band program. The piece is intended to introduce musicians to the fundamental elements of Latin music through simple latin rhythms and a three-part melodic structure. Because today's modern beginning jazz bands often include non-traditional jazz band instruments to ensure everyone can participate, this piece is flexible: it functions perfectly as a stand-alone jazz ensemble work or as a full-band arrangement. "Latin Destination" can be performed after students have mastered their first six notes (with a few minor additions).

Format

"This and That" is written with a limited yet flexible beginning jazz ensemble instrumentation. Non-typical instruments are added as is sometimes needed in a younger and enthusiastic band program. The piece is written with a limited range and beginning rhythms to allow for performing the piece with a younger ensemble. Measures 33-48 is the improvisational section. At measure 41, those that are not playing a solo, should play underneath the soloist. Decisions can be made about dynamics depending on availability of an amplification system.

This and That

Jazz Ensemble Score & Parts

"Feelin' Good" was written for my middle school marching band for their first out-of-state performance. There was not a title to the song when they performed it. Even though it almost has a tropical feeling to it, I settled on Feelin' Good as a title since it's attached to such a nice memory for me. It is written with a limited range and has easy to learn rhythms making it accessible to beginning and developing musicians alike.

    The x note-heads in the snare drum and tenor parts denote a rim shot is to be played.
    The x note-heads in the cymbal part denotes a hi-hat position is to be used, and the regular note-heads denote a regular crash is to be played.
    The bass drum and cymbals parts are each a single line to accommodate for those bands just being introduced to marching bass drums and cymbals. 

My kids had a blast performing this, and hopefully yours will too!

Feelin' Good

This piece is an exciting swing tune that both your students and audience will love! It is highly engaging for the eager beginning jazz ensemble thanks to its accessible rhythms and ranges. Rather than typical jazz charts, this is scored for full beginning band instrumentation to ensure every student can participate. The melodic parts are written in a 2-part style, and the duet soloists at the beginning are encouraged to stand in front of the ensemble. Additionally, feel free to use measures 25-36 as an accompaniment for the improvisation section in measures 37-48.

"Solitude" is a 2-part ballad composed for beginning jazz band programs with limited instrumentation, yet it includes parts for all the instruments found in a young and eager beginning band program. The piece is intended to introduce musicians to the fundamental elements of playing in a ballad style. Because today's modern beginning jazz bands often include non-traditional jazz band instruments, to ensure everyone can participate, this piece is flexible in that it functions perfectly as a stand-alone jazz ensemble work or as a flexible jazz band arrangement.
