<p>This driving rhythmic piece integrates the South Indian vocal percussion art form of konnakkol alongside vocal sound-bank language, creating a variety of colours and textures in the sonic blend. The rhythmic metre (tala) of the music is outlined using cyclic hand gestures (handclaps, waves and finger taps).</p>
<p>The works uses both intoned and pitched konnakol as a fully integrated vocal and musical expression in a contemporary choral context. Alongside the traditional intoned konnakol sections, we hear pitched konnakol phrases used in the expression of melodic passages, ostinati ‘riffs’ and layered textures. This driving, rhythmic song uses layered chant, vocal percussion, clapping patterns and simple percussion parts to create a spirited driving ensemble piece. Sung by choirs around the world, the song is inspired by the Zulu phrase 'thula mama' meaning 'don't cry' or 'don't worry mama'. The text uses composed lingual syllables to create an expressive vocal 'sound-bank' language. This song engages with the sky, looking up and out to the entrancing shapes and colours, textures and layers of light. 
With English lyrics in the verses, it then moves to the weaving rhythmic riff, integrating vocal sound-bank language and pitched konnakol lines (South Indian vocal percussion)
in the lower parts. A beautiful mix of groove and poetry your choir will love this deeply satisfying song.
It comes with excellent resources to support the learning. The ‘Following The Sky pronunciation video’ on YouTube outlines the vocal percussion, tala claps and sound bank syllables.
