This driving rhythmic piece integrates the South Indian vocal percussion art form of konnakkol alongside vocal sound-bank language, creating a variety of colours and textures in the sonic blend. The rhythmic metre (tala) of the music is outlined using cyclic hand gestures (handclaps, waves and finger taps).
The works uses both intoned and pitched konnakol as a fully integrated vocal and musical expression in a contemporary choral context. Alongside the traditional intoned konnakol sections, we hear pitched konnakol phrases used in the expression of melodic passages, ostinati ‘riffs’ and layered textures. Excellent audio and video resources – including a pronunciation video, support the learning of this piece. www.lisayoungmusic.com YouTube Channel: lisayoungmusic
