his piece was commisioned for a good friend of mine for his senior recital. They played trombone, so naturally I thought of the idea to write a trombone quartet. The only parameters that they had given me was that the piece could be put together in roughly 4-6 rehearsals. Because of this parameter, I decided to write something lyrical and very in the box (rhythmically wise) so that the players would be able to come back in easily if they lose their spot in the music.
"Night and Day" is a piece that dwells in the difference that us humans perceieve night and daytime. For me persoanlly, I think nighttime is more mysterious because of the lack of light, whereas daytime is very joyous because of light. The piece goes back and forth between the two, but ultimately ends up representing a sunset, where everything feels at peace.
