Episcopalian Vicar Phillips Brooks wrote this hymn-text about the mid-eastern city of Bethlehem after having visited there in 1865. He wrote it for his church and his organist, Lewis Redner, wrote the music. Redner named his hymn-tune St. Louis, which is the primary melody used in the United States. Vaughn Williams' Forest Green is the hymn-tune of choice in Great Britain. Melody-part style writing, and approach originated by Dr. Cooper provides very easy, melodic parts so that almost all adolescent singers are able to maintain their parts against the other parts as they sing them together.
