Judex (1885) is the best-known movement from the epic oratorio Mors et Vita (Death and Life) by Charles Gounod (1818-1893). Partly sung by choir in the original setting, the music describes God, seated as judge on his throne for the Day of Reckoning. Most of the movement consists of an idyllic melody, played in unison by the strings, braced at both ends by solemn fanfares of the brass section.

This arrangement is a semitone higher than the original, but no music was cut.

Although parts are provided for a typical small youth or community orchestra line-up, the musical texture is such that parts can easily be left out or swapped around at the discretion of the conductor. For similar reasons, alternate parts are provided for alto saxophone and bass clarinet, duplicating one of the horn and bassoon parts.

String parts include suggested bowing.

Could this be the most beautiful music ever written? This lush passage from the impressionist ballet by Ravel masterfully depicts the slow awakening of nature. It has been creatively re-orchestrated, with the difficulties of the woodwind and string parts of the original progressively simplified towards the lower-ranked players. At the very slow tempo, the layering of parts creates the intended shimmering effect in a way that is forgiving of the occasional imperfection in performance.

This arrangement is a major second lower than the original. No cuts have been applied to the music, but the last bar has been added to provide a satisfying ending. Add 155 to rehearsal numbers to find the equivalent spot in the original. String parts are bowed, while select fingering is included for the trickier passages only.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) originally composed Urlicht (Primal/Primeval Light) in 1892 as the last song of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn), to be sung by alto accompanied by piano or orchestra. He then re-orchestrated the music, and included it as the 4th movement in his 2nd symphony "Resurrection" a few years later. The song deals with longing for spiritual relief from earthly hardship, and is full of emotional depth and contrast, using evocative harmonic shifts and colorful orchestration.

This arrangement is a semitone higher than the original and has been typeset without key-signature for better readability. No music is cut from the original, although the time signature of bar 59 was modified to follow typical performance practice.

The Trumpet 2&amp;3 and harp parts are cued in other parts, and are therefore considered optional. The timpani and glockenspiel parts can also be omitted if necessary. Furthermore, a 4-stave condensed score is provided as well as a full orchestral score, to assist in ensuring all the parts are covered.

Primal Light

In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed l'Orfeo, one of the first ever operas, about Orpheus's failed attempt to bring his beloved Eurydice back from the Underworld. With the large number of players called on, this work heralded the birth of the symphony orchestra.

Apart from the massive historic significance of this opera, the music is surprisingly fresh, accessible to players of all levels and a joy to listen to. The Toccata - basically the Overture - is easy to put together and will fit any program as a curtain-raiser or interlude.
