Today Op. 31, No. 2 is routinely referred to by its nickname, the "Tempest Sonata." This term, however, does not appear on the title pages of any of the 1803 editions. The only reference to it is found of page 221 of Anton Schindler's biography of Beethoven. Schindler evidently asked Beethoven for an explanation of the Sonata, at which point Beethoven allegedly replied: "Just read Shakespeare's Tempest."
