I. Dance: A lively depiction of the deep connection between African culture and the art of dancing. Set at a brisk tempo and filled to the brim with wild syncopation, this is the perfect opener to set the stage for the remainder of the piece.

II. Song: An immediate change of pace for the piece that transports the listener to an African rainforest at night. This setting is perfect to lull your audience to sleep before the high-energy finale kicks into effect!

III. Battle: Inspired by the tales of ancient African warriors and modern Zulu shield dancers, this setting paints a more aggressive portrait of African culture before bringing the piece to a dramatic close.

Dreunsang: Three African Portraits

A ronin is a Japanese samurai warrior with no master. This composition is a musical depiction of the samurai spirit – heroic, firm, and unrelenting. It is a highly dramatic piece, employing a wide range of dynamics, colors, and textures often found in traditional Japanese music, and it should be performed with nothing short of the highest energy! Completed as a commission by the Independence Middle School Ratings Band, Director Christina Halstead.

A lyrical beginning band ballad designed to sound like an authentic African hymnsong -- perfect for instruction in expressive and cantabile playing styles! Completed as part 2/2 of a commission by Christina Halstead, director of the Independence Middle School Patriot Band from Coal City, WV.

Serengeti Lullaby

Tribute was written my senior year of high school in dedication to my graduating class. As exaggerative as it may seem, it truly took four years for me to shape how this piece sounds. It went through several conceptual stages, each straying further and further from the initial concept I had developed for the piece. My senior year, I sat down and deconstructed the writing process; what you hear today is the result- the truest form of this composition.  

I aimed to convey a variety of emotions through this music. Nostalgia- for the twelve years our class spent together, to pay homage to all the happy memories we made along the way. Grief- for the hardships we faced over those twelve years, the times when the future seemed uncertain. Jubilation- for the innumerable victories we saw, the times when we felt higher than the sky itself.  

Perhaps the most notable aspect of this piece is the choir feature. I decided to include the choir to commemorate my time as a member of the Independence High School music department. As a student, I participated in marching band, concert band, musical theatre, and show choir. It felt only appropriate to show love to both sides of my musicianship- instrumental and vocal.
