Sinfonia in D Major

Johan Joachim Agrell was a German-born Swedish composer of the Baroque era whose music reflects the elegance, energy, and craftsmanship of the early Classical transition. This arrangement is based on Agrell’s *Sinfonia in E Major* and includes all five movements of the work. Each movement may be performed independently, making the collection flexible for programming, or the movements can be performed together as a complete work, giving students the opportunity to experience the contrast and continuity of an entire multi-movement Baroque sinfonia. To make the work more accessible to developing string players, several technically demanding passages have been thoughtfully reworked while preserving Agrell’s musical character and intent. The work has also been transposed from E major to D major, providing a more comfortable key for the players and allowing greater accessibility across the ensemble. The result is an engaging introduction to the music of an accomplished but lesser-known Baroque composer, while offering students valuable opportunities to develop style, articulation, ensemble awareness, and musical expression across five contrasting movements.
