Soliloquy

This piece is for Orchestra but grouped as 4 Quintets plus Strings. Flutes and Clarinets, Double Reeds, Horns and Euphonium, Brass, and a full complement of Strings. It started as an elegy for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I decided to use the notes D, Bb and G as a mini motif to represent her initials. The fact that she spent 13 years (a prime number) on the appeals court and 27 years (3 cubed) on the Supreme Court induced me to extend the motif to a 5, 7 and 11 note set of pitches. These (and their inversions) became the bases for the work's melodies.
