Swimming with the Sharks is a fast and fiery Samba that is a programmatic battle between swimmer and sharks. The action and excitement for the whole band is constant as the struggle for survival ensues. The A sections are modal in nature, alternating between C and D-flat, suggesting a "Jaws" theme. The motive is further revealed as background figures behind trumpet and piano soloists. Then, an a cappella trombone montuna breaks out and sets up a sax soli, then a full out battle ensues when the shout section hits. A roaring finish ends the struggle with survival of the swimmer, but with a sinister warning chord. Unique and exciting from start to finish!
