Symphony No. 1

Scored for an orchestra of cellos, Wingate's First Symphony contains 13 independent cello parts which may be executed by single players, or doubled or tripled to create a cello ensemble of stage-burdening proportions. The first movement is a gigantic, 13-voice canon evoking the creation of the universe, while the second movement is an all-pizzicato fugue depicting the birth of human psychology. The last movement is a chorale, uniquely constructed from all natural harmonics, summoning the birth of mathematical understanding.
