As the title suggests, Tomfoolery is a piece that calls for three players with one tom each. It uses hocket rhythms between the players for the main thematic material in the opening and closing A sections. The sandwiched B section features each player in a brief solo, then together in a rudimental unison passage. This piece also involves various extended techniques such as stick clicks, playing on the rims of the drums, and playing on other performers' drums. A great selection for beginning-intermediate percussion ensembles, it will keep performers engaged and audiences entertained!

This piece is an attempt to amplify Mother Nature's eternal melody through a deluge of rhythms and pitches. Throughout the piece, a constant stream of running sixteenth notes juxtaposed with undulating dynamics helps to create the image of running water. At various points the music is tranquil and placid; at others it is tense, loud, and full of motion, just like a rushing waterfall.

Originally written in 1986, Suite for Lounge Lizard by Bob Bollman is an impressive tour-de-force for the advanced timpanist. This piece went on to win Bollman the 1986 and 1987 DCI Solo Competition, as well as the 1989 PASIC Solo Competition. Ever since, it's been performed on many recitals as an unpublished work, and we're now happy to be presenting it in fully-published form!
The suite contains three "acts" of varying character. Act 1 is a catchy, swing-influenced groove loaded with syncopation. Act 2 is a slower, dramatic movement built on a stately 6/8 ostinato. Act 3 is a sprint to the finish line, featuring blazing-fast licks and incorporating the added colors of a cowbell and a China cymbal. All in all, this suite is a spectacle, perfect for advanced players to perform on recitals or contests!

Scuttlebutt utilizes fairly basic instrumentation found in most band rooms. It relies heavily on a half-time snare backbeat while exploring various syncopated rhythms and triplet figures in the style of electronic dance music. The rhythmic textures are first built from scratch, one layer at a time, allowing the performers to naturally build their ensemble awareness and listening skills. As the piece progresses they are expanded to mini-features and conversational ideas that get thrown around the ensemble in a way that's certain to keep the audience wondering what will happen next! Toboggan is a magical work for young percussionists depicting a short, fast ride on a small sled. The piece starts by capturing the excitement of finding new-fallen snow. The descent swishes and jingles at high speed through sudden direction changes, patches of rough snow, and the gentle rising and falling of fresh powder ending with a playful crash into a snowdrift. The piece makes for a great introduction to mallet percussion using mainly stepwise motion for the melody and supporting roles. The accompanying orchestral battery parts should fall well within the range of most beginners. A sincere delight!

Fuerza Negra by Francisco Perez is a medium-difficulty percussion ensemble tune. The piece is characterized by an unstoppable groove, which draws from the rhythms and harmonies of Latin, pop, and rock music. It's sure to be a crowd-pleaser for any occasion!
Regarding the Spanish title, Perez explains a double meaning. Firstly, it's a nod to the commissioning ensemble's school mascot, the Northwestern State University Demons. Additionally, through the translation "Black strength and energy," it's a humble tribute and show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Animal Cracker Rag is a perfect solo for a young, outgoing, and potentially crazy performer looking for an opportunity to showcase their talent and sense of humor. This piece harks back to music from the 1910's and 20's, where polka and ragtime were the dominant musical styles. As composer Brian Slawson puts it in his own words, "written with a tip of the hat to Russian composers Dmitri Kabalevsky and Aram Khachaturian, Animal Cracker Rag is the kind of campy, two-beat fare often heard at circuses." This piece also includes an optional piano accompaniment geared toward percussionists who are looking to gain some experience on the instrument.

Falling to sleep on the night before Christmas is no easy task for a child. While anxiously dreaming of things to come, the clock ticks and tocks. Such is the story of Brian Slawson's Christmas Day. Following a festive statement from the solo chimes, holiday cheer spills forth in musical colors only percussion instruments can provide. The clock, portrayed by temple blocks, starts its countdown to the big day amid a light and carefree melody. Rhythms are generally basic and repetitive. Besides providing holiday cheer, Christmas Day is a great vehicle in which to teach younger players the basics of handling 12/8 time. You can't wrap that kind of gift with a bow!

Brian Slawson's Frightmare is based on two classic works by the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Adapted for beginner-level percussion ensemble, the two movements are dark and haunting, yet sharply contrasting. The first, "Full Moon," is eerie, brooding, and gentle. The second, "Shadow Dance," is lively and articulate.
Both movements employ simple techniques and appropriate doubling to enable a highly musical performance by beginner percussionists. Where the first movement focuses on rolls and slow strokes, the second switches to a straightforward waltz style. Nearly the entire work consists of quarter notes and dotted half notes, except for a featured marimba part in "Shadow Dance" that takes the lead with eighth notes. Although particularly handy for Halloween concerts, any ensemble of developing players is sure to have fun with this piece year-round!

Keyboard Percussion Quartet Score & Parts

The Mandalorian arranged by Kirk J. Gay is based on the main theme from the live-action Star Wars television series of the same name. The original score, written by Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson, was birthed through experimentation and improvisation. Goransson discovered the opening theme of the work by playing a bass recorder processed with digital audio effects to emulate a more "futuristic" sound. Throughout the piece, Goransson embodies the spirit of the American Western with earthy textures, ostinato drum patterns, and a nod to the famous whistle from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, while incorporating science fiction elements with various synthesizers and references to the Star Wars films.

Gay's adaptation for percussion ensemble aims to be a close representation of the original score in its instrumentation, effects, and orchestration. The piece calls for 10 players across commonly found percussion instruments. To fully embrace the science fiction nature of the piece, Gay has incorporated a thunder sheet and waterphone for special effect moments. The Mandalorian is an entertaining and fun addition to any percussion ensemble concert.
