Built on a series of ostinati, "The Groove" is a G minor jam-style tune that will get heads moving and feet tapping. Featuring only quarter notes and rests, and the first six notes with a fair amount of repition, this piece gives beginners a catchy way to focus on continued fundamental development. The true "groove" comes from the percussion parts, where much of the writing is meant to emulate a drumset. Teamwork and excellent collaboration will be necessary to pull this piece off, and if you are short on percussionists I'd recommend cutting the following in order: all mallets except bells (or play the entire part on xylophone if you prefer), crash cymbal, triangle, tambourine, suspended cymbal, hi-hat, bells. It is my sincere hope that you and your band have a blast with this tune, and I would like to apologize to any directors who will be hearing these ostinati for months as the kids play them endlessly! But for what it's worth, this is the sound of joyful music-making and successful teaching.
