The Missions was commissioned to celebrate and honor the collection of five 18th century Spanish Missions located along the San Antonio river which have been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Four of the five designated Missions make up the San Antonio Missions National Park and include: Mission Conception, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission Espada. Also included in the World Heritage Site designation is Mission Alamo which played a critical historic role in the creation of the State of Texas. The work consists of five musical sections each describing monumental events which have played a pivotal role in the history of the Missions. The sections are: The Arrival of the Spanish Monks on the South Texas prairie Worship At The Missions Fiesta The Arrival of the Mexican army and the Battle of the Alamo Song Of Peace
