"The Perils of Victory" is a patriotic, concert-style march
intended for public performance. It is not suitable for marching due to
technical passages and scope of form. It was composed for a USO march-writing
contest in 1979 to honor the United States military. The only guidelines
given were that it had to be composed in the style and structure of John
Philip Sousa. I gave this march a 'Medium-Advanced' grade level mainly due to
the demanding phrases and endurance needed in the brass, and the obbligato
lines for the upper woodwinds in the grandioso strain. Enjoy a wonderful
performance by the United States Army Field Band on the video. Notes: The
audio sample is edited for time, it has no repeats. 9 x 12 score and parts.
