The Soldier (1914)

Rupert Brooke's The Soldier (1914) is one of only a handful of poems that exist by him. Brooke, born in 1887, died at the age of 27, but not after having established himself as a both a poet and an accomplished travel writer. The Soldier is from his posthumously published collection entitled 1914 and Other Poems and is one of if not his best known work. This setting of the work places it in a more personal vein and uses triadic, quartal, and quintal harmonies to capture the longing, and bittersweet nature of the text, as well as the peace and comfort one finds in the remembrance of one's home and homeland.
