Written for concert band, "Those Christmas Kings" is a jazz waltz based on three traditional Christmas carols: "We Three Kings", "Good King Winceslas", and "Once in Royal David's City". All three were originally published within a single decade of one another, with each becoming popular in its own right. While the first two are quoted throughout this arrangement, "Once in Royal David's City" gets its own special treatment in the 5/4 section, using the carol's traditional performance practice of solos followed by full chorus. This setting, using jazz styles and harmonies, updates these carols for your audience.
