Three Movements: I (Allegro), II (Adagio), III (Allegro-Presto)
The mp3 is the third movement. The entire piece has been performed several times;
however, there is no performance recording.
All movements are rhythmic, with some dissonance, contemporary and dramatic,
staging conflict between violin and piano.
Movement I, (2:03 min) in 6/4 with feeling of displaced accents, mysterious and feeling
of intensity.
Movement II, (3:50 min) dreamy; uses whole tone scale; piano is sparse with options for
inside piano on strings.
Movement III, (2:24 min.) chromatic, agitato, polytonal.
History: As a college composition student before the age of technology, an assignment was to compose a piece for a
fellow student. I wrote this piece for violinist, John Dewey, who was always willing to try
new musical ideas. We were both members of the college New Music Ensemble. John
also played jazz violin at a local restaurant, and he had one of his violins painted
metallic blue to help resonate the sound. Trilogy was well received, and we performed it
often. I dedicate this piece to him.
