In 1837 there was political unrest and dissatisfaction with the ruling classes in both Upper and Lower Canada. Revolts led by William Lyon Mackenzie and Louis Papineau were unsuccessful and those involved were forced to flee from their homes. The folk tune "Si tu te mets anguille" was used by M.A. Gerin-Lajoie and new words were added to tell of the exiles' unhappiness at being away from their homeland, family and friends. The song describes the feelings of one young French-Canadian exile as he wanders by the banks of a river flowing toward Canada. He asks the river to take his sad greetings to his friends at home. "Un Canadien Errant" is a much- loved song in French Canada.
