Concerto in E Major

(for String Bass and String Orchestra)
Ronan Bodisch - Ronan Bodisch
Publisher Desc.  This concerto by Ronan Bodisch is meant to give daring bass players the chance to show off their skills! Challenges include double- and triple-stops in both arco and pizzicato, harmonics, fast string crossings, and cadenza playing. Performance Notes: Movement 1 - Allegro Moderato: This movement is written like most classical concertos: in a quick, but elegant style. It is also scored in a theme and variations form. Movement 2 - Fantasia on "In the Bleak Midwinter": This movement is the composer's take on the Christmas carol "In the Bleak Midwinter." The cadenza provided is a suggestion to the performer but can be substituted with an original cadenza written by the soloist. This movement builds up into the dramatic section at Letter P, which is meant to be played as loud as possible by both the soloist and orchestra; it is the composer's signature theme. Movement 3 - Tempo di Valse - Presto!: This movement begins in a waltz-style variation of the first movement. At letter T.5, the time change does not affect the tempo, and the quarter note should remain constant. The provided cadenza in this movement is recommended as it contains a re-statement of "In the Bleak Midwinter." However, if the performer prefers to play their own cadenza, that is allowed as well. The REAL fun begins at letter X, where the tempo immediately goes up to 180 BPM (or faster!). In this section, a restatement of the theme heard at letter P (the composer's signature) is re-stated. At measure 127, it is noted to the soloist that if they are not physically tired by the end of the piece, they did not play it right. Go crazy with this!
