But the story of this piece is one of pure luck. I bought a Xoxox chocolate bar, which is a brand that not only tastes delicious but also incorporates poetry on the back of its wrappers. I didn't know this when I first bought the chocolate bar, but I saw the text of this piece printed on the back and thought, Hey! That would make a good piece.' As it happened, I had a melodic idea that had been rattling around in my head for a few days, and it was searching for a home. As it happened, the text fit the rhythm of the melody perfectly. The first 12 bars basically put themselves together by chance. The whole piece is themes and variations of that first phrase of music. The text is of Shakespearean origin, and it can often be hard for us modern readers to decipher his verbosity, but I'll do my best to give you a summary of what's being said here. Shakespeare is talking about how he is writing to his lover (most likely a young man) and how any attempt at writing how he feels will never be enough to express the full range of what he feels. He is saying that the only way he's ever been able to write well enough to describe the depth of his love is unless a star shines upon him and his words magically transform from their meager state into something adorned with enough value to deserve his lover's regards.
