Rhythm One on One
A Dalcroze exercise is like a flowing musical performance: there is a preparation, a definite beginning, and a rhythmic continuity throughout. At its best, the lesson itself is a thrilling music improvisation, where the teacher and student contribute to and experience an underlying rhythm (Fundamental Gesture), which unites the students' body, mind and spirit into artistic communication. Eurhythmics is a way of experiencing and exploring musical sensation and musical knowledge together. The process begins the first time you walk through the music, using your feet, instead of your fingers. Julia Schnebly-Black, Ph.D., is the director of the extension program of Dalcroze Eurhythmics at the University of Washington. She has been teaching Dalcroze Eurhythmics for over 30 years and is the former president of the Dalcroze Society of America. Stephen F. Moore, Ph.D., is an acclaimed concert pianist, Dalcroze educator and clinician, and professor of aural skills at Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
