The Bells (I. Sleigh Ride)

James Knox - Knoxmusic, James Knox
Publisher Desc.  The Bells' by Edgar Allan Poe is a musical poem. In it, the poet depicts the various sounds bells make and the events they symbolize. Composer, James W. Knox, breaks it down into four sections. The first movement, Sleigh Ride is light-hearted, youthful and filled with delight. Poe may have been inspired to write this piece by Marie Louise Shew, who helped care for Poe's wife while she was dying. She may have suggested to the poet to use ringing bells as the initial starting point from which to write. The poem has a distinct musical quality which was no doubt influenced by the sound and rhythm of the ringing bells. In the first part, Poe describes how the sky, the "heavens" seems to "Twinkle / With a crystalline delight". Generally, this image is related to one of youth and newness. Everything feels pure, joyful, and new. As the poem progresses, the poem changes drastically and the images get darker, alluding to age. Sleigh Ride (movement one) can be performed separately. The entire poem (other three movements) will be available in the new year, 2024. Written for TBB, Trombone, Piano and Percussion
