Alma Redemptoris Mater
Publisher Desc.
The Marian motet Alma Redemptoris Mater is one of two settings of this text composed by Josquin and possibly one of his earlier compositions. This setting is based upon the corresponding chant and opens with a canon at the unison. The Josquin scholar Willem Elders suggests that the symbolism of the canon at the opening of the secunda pars represents the idea of the birth of the Creator from the mother. Originally scored for low voices, the piece has here been transposed up an octave.
