Carla's Tango
This piece combines rhythmic influences from jazz and an Argentinean milonga. Inspired by a work by Carla Bley, it explores a range of sonorities that include Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, George Russell, and Astor Piazzolla. It is written for a soprano sax soloist but the solo part can be adapted for other woodwinds or brass. The saxophone section doubles flutes (altos), clarinets (tenors) and bass clarinet (bari), and the brass is muted throughout the whole piece. This chart delivers a mysteriously intriguing sound that can be a great contrast in any medium-to-difficult level program.
