Prelude No. 1 for Solo Timpani was composed in January of 1984 as a musical gift for Carol L Stumpf, principal timpanist of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Heraldic in nature, the piece utilizes dynamic and stylistic variance between the hands to make portions of the piece sound more like a duet than a solo.
