Theme & Variations for Virginals - Loth To Depart
Publisher Desc.
This series of variations by Giles Farnaby was composed around 1590 as
one of many pieces he wrote for the Virginal (a small harpsichord). The
keyboard compositions of the English virginalists are some of the most
advanced instrumental styles of the Renaissance, and Farnaby is considered to
have 'bridged' into the Baroque. This set of variations is based on a popular
tune of the time "Loth To Depart".
Mr. Hazzard arranged the piece for the Berklee College of Music
Concert Band in 1977. His scoring of the music retains its typically English
flavor, while exploring the winds and brass of the band both separately and
together showing the many colors available in the contemporary wind ensemble.
The theme and its five variations have a running time of 3 min. 15 sec.
